AI and the Law: What Do Educators Need To Know?
Monday October 14, 2024 8:45am - 9:30am EDT
Hello everyone!   Thanks for signing up!  I will post a survey here the week before just to get some info.  Feel free to email Rdene915@gmail.com with specific questions or connect on social! See below for additional information.

This session, led by an educator and an attorney (Duquesne Law), will explore the legal implications and complexities related to AI in our schools. We will discuss privacy concerns, data protection, and compliance with COPPA, FERPA, and other relevant laws. I have 7 years of learning, researching, teaching about, and presenting on AI and have completed my doctoral work in this area.
I am now diving more into the legal implications. We will also cover copyright, licensing, and ownership issues relevant to educators and students and provide guidance on how to navigate these challenges responsibly while fostering student innovation and creativity in the classroom.  We will discuss what AI is, what the impact is in our schools, and look at COPPA, FERPA, and other relevant laws. A survey will be shared.
If you would like me to provide PD for your school or small group coaching, AI is my favorite topic! Contact me via bit.ly/thriveineduPD  This will be an interactive conversation, ideas shared, discussions, a great space to join and connect and learn together!

I will also have copies of my How To Teach AI Book available. If anyone is interested, you can pre-order it before the event and I will bring it. bit.ly/bookorderpoth  There is a discount and also a bulk discount too.

Afternoon Keynote
Monday October 14, 2024 12:30pm - 1:00pm EDT
The advent of large langue models in artificial intelligence, like Claude.ai, Google Gemini, and ChatGPT, have fundamentally changed how business is conducted, how students are taught, and how people access information. In fact, many of the popular educational AI tools are powered by these platforms. But what has actually shaped these powerful tools, and how might those tools shape us and our students? To put it another way, what biases and ethical systems have been intentionally or unintentionally introduced into AI models that power our new educational technology, and what potential impact might that have on students receiving instruction generated using these tools? Wrestle with some hard questions, have your assumptions challenged, and leave with a cautious optimism as Dr. Sams provides a framework for navigating bias and ethics in the emerging field of AI in education.

For the second year, the questionnaire was revised to specifically measure perceptions of equity in relation to AI. Our presentation will summarize these results and explain their relevance for education for K-12 educators and beyond.
